EC teacher heads up mission to impoverished Mexico!
Mr. Wickham returned to Mexico recently, armed with construction supplies and plenty of eager students. Before they left to come back home, they built two much-needed houses for impoverished Mexican families. With the exception of a few squished thumbs (watch that hammer!), everyone returned safe. Presidential Honor for El Camino Math Teacher
Dr. Sean Nank of El Camino High School has been named one of only 103 recipients nationwide of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. President Barack Obama announced the winners today. According to the National Science Foundation (NSF), Dr. Nank, who has taught at ECHS for nine years, was nominated for the award in part for “using humor and developing an excellent rapport with students.” He was also described as “maintaining rigor while easing mathematics anxiety in the classroom.” The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is awarded annually to the best pre-college-level science and mathematics teachers from across the country. The winners are selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators following an initial selection process done at the state level. Mark Fairbank, a science teacher from Paso Robles, was the only other winner from California. Winners of the award each receive $10,000 from the NSF and will receive their awards later this year in Washington, D.C. |
